Salon.com announced Thursday that it will cease publishing its cultural and political website after 31 years, ending a run that began in Novemberโ€ฏ1995 when a small group of journalists launched one of the first adโ€‘supported news sites on the early web. The decision comes as the outlet, owned by Salon Media Group, will lay off its remaining staff and shut down the editorial platform that has long been a home for progressive commentary, investigative pieces and longโ€‘form essays. The closure will take effect in early December, and the siteโ€™s archives will be placed in a readโ€‘only mode for public access.

The shutdown reflects broader challenges facing legacy digital publishers that built their business models on banner ads and modest subscription fees. Salonโ€™s revenue has dwindled for years as advertisers shifted spend to social media giants and programmatic platforms, while its audience has fragmented across podcasts, newsletters and video. The outlet survived a 2019 bankruptcy filing and a 2022 acquisition by a private equity firm that promised a โ€œnew era,โ€ but the promised infusion of capital never materialised, leaving the operation cashโ€‘strapped and unable to invest in the technology needed to compete with newer sites. Staff turnover, a shrinking newsroom and rising costs of content licensing further eroded its financial footing.

Former contributors and media observers reacted with a mix of disappointment and nostalgia. Longโ€‘time writer Michael Moynihan called Salon โ€œa pioneer that gave a voice to progressive thought when mainstream outlets ignored it.โ€ The Columbia Journalism Review noted that Salonโ€™s early adoption of a payโ€‘wall in the 2000s was ahead of its time, but that the model never achieved scale. Several current editors said they are negotiating severance packages and exploring opportunities at other digital newsrooms, while a small group of freelancers pledged to archive and republish the most impactful stories on a communityโ€‘run platform.

What happens next is uncertain for Salonโ€™s extensive archive of more than 50,000 articles. The company said it will partner with a thirdโ€‘party digital preservation service to keep the content searchable, but the future of the brand itself remains unclear. Industry analysts say the closure underscores the difficulty of sustaining independent, ideologically driven news sites without a robust subscription base or diversified revenue streams. For readers, the loss means one less venue for longโ€‘form progressive journalism, and it may spur other niche outlets to fill the gap left by Salonโ€™s departure.
