A seven-day silent meditation retreat can trigger fast, dramatic changes in the brain and body, a small but rigorous study shows. Researchers found that after just seven days of intensive practice, participantsโ€™ brain scans showed new patterns linked to neuroplasticity, immunity, metabolism and natural pain relief. Some even developed brain connectivity similar to whatโ€™s seen after psychedelic experiences, suggesting meditation can produce powerful altered states without drugs.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that short, focused retreats can have measurable biological effects. Earlier studies showed meditation can reduce inflammation and stress, but most involved weeks or months of practice.
