Scientists have reported remarkable improvements in lung growth among young children living in London after the implementation of an Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) in 2019. The study observed more than 3,400 primary school children in London and Luton, revealing that children whose lung development had been hindered by pollution showed significant recovery following the introduction of pollution control measures.
The research highlights the urgent need for clean air initiatives. Air pollution is known to impede lung growth in children, increasing their risk of asthma, heart disease, diabetes, and even premature death. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing lungs and immune systems, as well as their proximity to ground-level pollution sources like vehicle exhaust. The death of Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, a nine-year-old girl who became the first person in the UK to have air pollution listed as a cause of death, underscores the critical health risks associated with poor air quality.
In the study, researchers tracked children aged six to nine from London's Ulez and compared them to a similar group in Luton, which has lower pollution levels. They conducted annual lung function tests before and after the Ulez was introduced. Initially, the London children's lung capacity was noticeably smaller than that of their peers in Luton. However, by the end of the study, their lung capacity had nearly aligned with that of the Luton group, indicating a significant acceleration in lung growth among the London children.
Professor Chris Griffiths from Queen Mary University of London expressed surprise at the speed of recovery, stating that the results demonstrate how effective clean air zones can be in rapidly improving children's health. The study's findings suggest that initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution can have immediate benefits, allowing children in urban areas to achieve lung capacities comparable to those in cleaner environments. This research could pave the way for more aggressive air quality policies globally, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing children's health in urban planning.
