Smart beds and motion sensors - is this the future of dementia care?

There are sensors in every room of Jyoti and Bharat Patel's home. Their movements and habits are monitored constantly.

But this doesn't worry them, in fact it gives them peace of mind.

Jyoti was diagnosed with dementia five years ago, and they are now part of an NHS trial using high-tech devices to help patients live at home safely.

The couple, who are in their 70s, are one of more than 250 families participating in the project by the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI).

The hope is that the technology could be extended more widely across the health service, to reduce preventable trips to hospital and give families peace of mind.

Bharat and Jyoti met at a magic show in 1977 and became a double act, with their career leading them to meet King Charles and Princess Anne as well as a host of celebrities.

In 2019, Bharat started noticing that Jyoti was making uncharacteristic mistakes on stage.

"Normally she used to set my stage up and everything was perfect, but I saw something I was looking for and it wasn't there, so I thought something is wrong," he said.
