Smartphone prices may be soaring, but Americans are getting off easy

If you’ve been grumbling about the price of this year’s flagship phones , you’re not exactly wrong. Samsung, Google, and Motorola have all asked US shoppers to pay more for their latest flagships, with most of the increases landing around the $100 mark. But here’s the thing: It could be a whole lot worse.

Counterpoint Research’s latest smartphone price tracker shows that global smartphone retail prices have climbed an average of 15% so far in 2026. More than 40% of smartphone models have seen price hikes this year, while new launches are coming in 25% more expensive than their year-ago counterparts.

In premium-heavy markets, the US sits at the bottom of Counterpoint’s list, with average smartphone prices rising just 5% compared to Europe’s 7% and China’s 10%. That’s a remarkable contrast in price-sensitive markets, where prices have climbed 21% in India, 19% across Asia Pacific, and 18% in the Middle East and Africa. Latin America has also seen a 16% increase.

That puts the $100 increases we’ve seen from major US manufacturers in a rather different light. Google’s Pixel 11 series , for example, added $100 across the lineup, while Samsung did the same with the Galaxy S26 and S26+. Motorola went a step further with its Razr Ultra 2026 , which jumped by $200. Much of this pressure comes down to components, with smartphone chips getting scarcer and more expensive in 2026.

The upcoming iPhone 18 series could add another data point when Apple unveils it next week. Whatever Apple decides to charge, though, US buyers are still entering the new generation from a relatively comfortable position compared with consumers elsewhere.

That’s not to say the US is immune from the squeeze. Counterpoint says manufacturers are changing specifications to keep costs under control, including reducing storage, trimming camera configurations, and bringing more 4G phones to some price segments. For shoppers, that could make the traditional upgrade cycle increasingly difficult to justify.

Counterpoint says consumers are already delaying upgrades, waiting for major sales, choosing lower-storage configurations, and turning to refurbished devices. But the US has another advantage here: Postpaid plans and carrier financing can spread the cost of a more expensive phone over monthly payments.
