Hundreds of volunteers and environmental workers gathered at Fuente de Piedra lake in southern Spain on Saturday for the annual flamingo-ringing event. The program, now in its 40th year, involves fitting young flamingos with lightweight metal rings to track their migration across Europe and North Africa. This yearโ€™s effort focused on tagging 600 chicks, part of a long-term effort to monitor population trends and habitat use.

Fuente de Piedra, declared a nature reserve in 1984, is one of Europeโ€™s most important breeding sites for greater flamingos. The shallow, saline lake provides ideal conditions for the birds, supporting one of the continentโ€™s largest colonies. Ringing began in the 1980s as scientists sought to understand migration patterns, longevity, and threats like habitat loss and climate change. Since then, over 200,000 chicks have been ringed, with some individuals recorded traveling as far as Morocco and Senegal.

The ringing process is carefully timed to coincide with the breeding season, when chicks are large enough to handle but still dependent on adults. Volunteers and researchers work in teams to approach nesting areas at dawn, when birds are less stressed. Each ring carries a unique code and contact details, allowing researchers and the public to report sightings. This data helps conservationists assess breeding success, dispersal, and the impact of environmental pressures such as drought or pollution.

What happens next is a months-long wait for sightings to trickle in from across the region. Some rings are recovered from dead birds, providing insights into causes of mortality. Others are spotted by birdwatchers in wetlands from Doรฑana in Spain to the Banc dโ€™Arguin in Mauritania. The project not only supports scientific research but also builds public awareness of migratory birds and their habitats. With flamingo populations fluctuating due to water scarcity and human disturbance, long-term monitoring remains critical to their survival.
