Spotify is set to implement an AI Persona label to identify artist accounts that are not real people. This new initiative, announced on August 11, aims to provide transparency regarding the growing presence of AI-generated music on the platform. The labels will help listeners distinguish between human artists and those created by generative AI.
The move comes as Spotify faces an influx of AI-generated content, raising questions about authenticity in the music industry. By introducing the AI Persona badge, the company seeks to address concerns from both artists and listeners about the implications of artificial intelligence in music creation. The new feature will start appearing in mid-September, initially on mobile devices, where users can see the badge on artist profiles, in search results, and within playlists.
Artists who wish to self-identify as AI Personas can do so through the Spotify for Artists portal. In addition, Spotify plans to employ a combination of human evaluations and AI reviews to assign the Likely AI Persona badge to accounts that may not represent real individuals. If an account receives the badge mistakenly, there will be an appeal process available. Notably, music from AI Personas will not be included in Spotify's personalized recommendation algorithms by default.
This initiative highlights Spotify's dual approach to artificial intelligence: while it aims to inform listeners about the nature of the music they consume, the company simultaneously integrates various AI tools into its services. As the music landscape continues to evolve with technology, Spotify's efforts to clarify the distinction between human and AI-generated artists could shape future interactions within the industry.
