Spotify has been hard at work helping listeners identify AI-created content. The streaming platform rolled out verification for music creators with its โ€œ Verified by Spotify โ€ badges, and now it is planning to help users identify artists who have created their public identities using AI tools.

The company today announced a new โ€œAI Personaโ€ label that it will display on artist profiles that may be AI-generated and do not represent a real person. This, Spotify hopes, will help users feel more confident trusting the artists behind the music they listen to.

Artists can self-disclose as an โ€œAI Personaโ€ through Spotify for Artists, and Spotify will display the โ€œAI Personaโ€ badge on their profiles. However, it will also display a โ€œLikely AI Personaโ€ label on profiles that it suspects are AI-generated, even if the artist doesnโ€™t self-disclose as such.

Itโ€™s worth noting that the โ€œAI Personaโ€ label isnโ€™t meant to identify whether an artistโ€™s music is AI-generated. It is solely focused on their public identity. The platform already offers features such as AI Credits and SongDNA to help users identify music created using generative AI tools.

The platform has also said that it will not include music from profiles with the AI Persona badge in any editorial or algorithmic recommendations. The only way music from these profiles will be recommended to a listener is if the listener has followed an AI Persona-labeled artist.

Spotify will display the new label starting in mid-September. It will appear on artist profiles in the banner and about sections. It will also be displayed in search results and on track rows in playlists. Users will also be able to tap the badge to see whether an artist self-disclosed as an AI Persona or if the platform marked them as one based on its judgment.
