U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday as high oil prices and elevated government bond yields raised concerns about inflation, leading to a sell-off in technology shares. The Nasdaq Composite led the decline, dropping 1.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased by 0.2% and the S&P 500 fell by 0.6%. This downturn extended the losses that began earlier in the trading week.

The current market pressures are largely tied to rising oil prices, which have surged to their highest levels in over two weeks. President Trumpโ€™s recent remarks about increasing economic pressure on Iran and threatening military action against Oman have contributed to this rise. Brent crude futures, a global benchmark, have climbed near $91 per barrel, while U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude futures have risen to $84 per barrel. This spike comes as the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has dropped to its lowest level since 1982, intensifying supply concerns.

In addition to oil prices, rising bond yields are impacting the market. The 10-year Treasury yield remains high at 4.70%, while the 30-year yield has eased slightly to 5.30% after reaching a 19-year high. The combination of increased oil prices, an AI-driven borrowing boom, and worries about government debt have contributed to these elevated yields. Such conditions typically create headwinds for tech stocks, which are often more sensitive to interest rate fluctuations.

Despite these challenges, earnings reports have provided some support for stocks during this reporting season. Although Home Depotโ€™s stock dipped after it reported improved sales driven by smaller summer projects, Klarnaโ€™s stock fell sharply due to a lowered outlook. The mixed earnings results reflect the broader uncertainty in the market, suggesting that investors should brace for continued volatility as economic conditions evolve.
