Suno implements audio watermarks to identify AI-generated songs amid legal scrutiny

Suno, the AI music generator, announced it will introduce audio watermarking to help identify songs created on its platform. This decision comes amid ongoing legal challenges and heightened scrutiny from the music industry. CEO Mikey Shulman shared the news in a blog post, outlining plans for new "transparency tools" that will label AI-generated songs when they appear elsewhere. While the specifics of the watermarking technology remain unclear, Shulman emphasized that it aims to counteract AI-related fraud more effectively.

The move follows increased pressure from major music labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, which have been vocal about disqualifying AI-generated tracks from music charts. Suno will also implement download limits to prevent the mass distribution of these songs on streaming platforms. These changes come after years of legal disputes, with several AI music companies facing copyright infringement accusations for using protected music without permission. In November, Warner Music reached a licensing agreement with Suno, resolving a long-standing conflict over artist rights and likenesses.

Suno maintains that it does not use artist names in its training data and prohibits users from incorporating specific copyrighted songs in their prompts. However, a recent ruling from a German court sided with the licensing agency Gema, claiming that Suno improperly trained its systems on protected music. The company disagrees with the ruling and is considering an appeal.

To bolster its compliance efforts, Suno is collaborating with content recognition firms like Audible Magic and Musixmatch to monitor uploaded audio for potential copyright violations. These developments reflect the broader industry's urgency to establish clearer guidelines for AI-generated content, ensuring artists' rights are protected while navigating new technological landscapes.
