Supernatural, the virtual reality fitness app once owned by Meta, is making a comeback as an independent company. The app, which was paused earlier this year after Meta cut jobs and halted new content, will relaunch later in 2024, according to Head of Fitness Leanne Pedante. The reboot comes with a price hike back to its original $20 monthly or $200 annual fee, but that hasnโ€™t deterred its loyal user base, many of whom were upset by the potential shutdown.

The move follows Metaโ€™s decision in January to shut down Supernaturalโ€™s VR division and pause new content. But instead of disappearing, the company is rebuilding as a standalone app, bringing back its library of over 3,000 workouts, the same coaches, and its signature immersive environments. Pedante says the team is now focused on reviving the platform while also negotiating new music licenses and releasing fresh content after a long pause.

Existing and new subscribers can sign up early as Founding Members for a discounted $180 yearly fee. Pedante highlights a key advantage of being a smaller team: speed. She says the company quickly responded to community concerns by creating a scholarship program for those facing financial hardship. Limited scholarships will be offered quarterly, with some members even expressing interest in paying for othersโ€™ memberships.

Despite the price increase, Supernatural remains cheaper than most gyms or fitness clubs. Thereโ€™s no commute, no shared equipment, and no communal showersโ€”just on-demand workouts in stunning virtual landscapes. The catch? You still need a high-end VR headset, like the Meta Quest 3 or 3S, which cost $350 to $600. And while the app offers convenience, it canโ€™t fully replace a gymโ€™s cardio machines or weight racks. Still, for devoted users, the reboot is a chance to bring back a beloved fitness experienceโ€”with a few new perks.
