Dubai extradites Kinahan to Dublin for trial

Suspected crime boss Daniel Kinahan is being flown from Dubai to Dublin on an Irish government jet to face charges of directing a criminal organisation. The 49-year-old, arrested in the UAE in April, is expected to land in Dublin before 19:00 local time on Sunday, where he will be immediately charged and brought before Ireland’s Special Criminal Court.

Kinahan’s extradition follows months of legal battles after Irish courts issued a warrant for his arrest. He had fought the order but was ultimately unsuccessful. The operation involves a high-security convoy, including a newly acquired bulletproof and bombproof van, with armed police, prison service personnel, and defence forces on standby. Kinahan is expected to be held in the maximum-security Portlaoise Prison, where facilities have been upgraded in anticipation of his arrival.

The Kinahan cartel, which he allegedly led, has been described by the US Treasury as one of the world’s most dangerous organised crime groups. Sanctioned by the US in 2022, the gang has been linked to global drug and firearms trafficking, as well as at least 18 gangland murders in Ireland. Kinahan himself survived a murder attempt in 2016 during a Dublin hotel shooting. The group’s estimated profits exceed €1 billion, with operations spanning decades.

This extradition marks the second major transfer under the UAE-Ireland agreement, following the 2023 extradition of Sean McGovern, a senior lieutenant in the same organisation, who was later sentenced to 24 years in prison. Irish authorities are now preparing to prosecute Kinahan for his role in the cartel’s activities, signalling a significant blow to its operations.
