SpaceX and AMD reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings on Tuesday, but their shares fell significantly on Wednesday as investors reacted negatively to the results. SpaceX's revenue for the second quarter reached $7.8 billion, surpassing analyst projections of $6.81 billion and up from $4.7 billion in the previous quarter. However, the company's substantial capital expenditures, particularly in AI, raised concerns among investors.

SpaceX's capital spending on AI soared to $15.8 billion in the latest quarter, far exceeding analysts' expectations and increasing sharply from $7.7 billion in Q1. This spike in investment has raised alarms about the sustainability of such high spending, especially given the uncertainty surrounding returns on these substantial expenditures. As a result, SpaceX's stock plummeted more than 8% on Wednesday, reflecting investor skepticism about the company's future profitability in the AI sector.

AMD also reported strong quarterly results, beating estimates and providing an optimistic outlook. Nonetheless, Wall Street had high expectations, and the companyโ€™s inability to fully meet them led to a drop of more than 5% in its stock price. The tech industry is closely watching AMD, especially with Nvidia set to announce its results on August 26, which could further influence market sentiment.

In the broader tech landscape, Amazon's market capitalization surpassed $3 trillion for the first time this week, while Microsoftโ€™s stock continues to rise following its recent strong earnings report. The contrasting fortunes of these companies highlight the volatile nature of tech stocks, particularly as investors grapple with the implications of heavy investments in AI and other emerging technologies.
