A Nevada man was arrested after his Tesla struck a tourist couple walking on the Las Vegas Strip with their 2โ€‘yearโ€‘old in a stroller, ejecting the child into a light pole and sending the adults flying. The driver, who admitted the crash, fled the scene and later drove to Topgolf, where he was detained by police. The incident was captured on a byโ€‘standerโ€™s phone and posted to social media, prompting a rapid police response.

The crash adds to a growing list of Tesla accidents that have drawn scrutiny over the companyโ€™s Autopilot and Fullโ€‘Self Driving claims. In the past year, regulators and courts have questioned whether Teslaโ€™s software can be marketed as โ€œselfโ€‘driving.โ€ The driverโ€™s admission that he was using the carโ€™s driverโ€‘assist features raises new questions about how the system was being used at the time of the collision.

Police reports say the couple was walking in a crowd near the Strip when the Tesla, traveling at an estimated 35 mph, collided with the stroller. The child was thrown against a street light and suffered a fractured rib, while the parents sustained broken ribs and a concussion. The driver faces a charge of reckless homicide and is being held without bail pending a court hearing. Tesla has not yet issued a statement about the incident, but the companyโ€™s legal team has been briefed.

The case will go to court later this month, and the coupleโ€™s families are reportedly exploring civil action. The incident may prompt the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles to review its licensing requirements for Tesla owners. Regulators in other states have already begun to examine the safety record of Teslaโ€™s driverโ€‘assist systems, and this highโ€‘profile accident could accelerate federal scrutiny of the autoโ€‘drive industry.
