Tesla launches Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin, Texas

Tesla has officially launched its Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. This announcement comes nearly two years after the vehicle was first unveiled. Users in Austin can now hail rides through the Robotaxi app available on iOS and Android. While the app supports requests from other cities like Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, the Cybercab option is currently limited to Austin. Customers cannot specifically choose a Cybercab at this time; ride availability will depend on the number of passengers and overall demand.

The launch of the Cybercab aligns with Tesla's push to expand its autonomous vehicle fleet. The company has received authorization to operate 314 driverless vehicles in Texas, primarily consisting of Model Ys. Of these, only 45 are Cybercabs. It remains unclear how many of these vehicles are functioning as taxis versus being used for ongoing testing. The design of Cybercabs, which lack steering wheels and brake pedals, is focused entirely on autonomy, reflecting Tesla's ambitious vision for the future of transportation.

Inside the Cybercab, passengers will find bench-style seating designed to accommodate up to two individuals, along with a large touchscreen display at the center of the dashboard. Although only two people can sit in the cabin, the vehicles include ample trunk space for luggage, scooters, and other large items. Currently, all Cybercabs in Austin are owned by Tesla, but the company plans to sell these vehicles in the future, potentially to entrepreneurs wanting to create their own ridesharing networks.

Elon Musk has previously suggested a future where individuals could own multiple Cybercabs, leveraging them to generate income through a ridesharing service. While these vehicles are not yet available for retail purchase, Tesla is actively seeking inquiries from companies interested in helping to expand its robotaxi network. This move signals a significant step towards a new era of transportation, where autonomous electric vehicles could redefine urban mobility.
