Teslaโ€™s Cybercab, a new autonomous rideโ€‘hailing service, began operating in select U.S. cities last month. The Department of Transportation has opened a formal investigation to determine whether the vehicle meets federal safety standards for driverless cars. The probe will review data from the first 10,000 trips and test the Cybercabโ€™s collisionโ€‘avoidance systems.

The move follows a decade of growing public and regulatory scrutiny over selfโ€‘driving technology. Tesla first tested its fullโ€‘selfโ€‘driving (FSD) software on private roads in 2019, and the Cybercab builds on that platform with a dedicated fleet of 200 vehicles. The company claims the cars can navigate complex traffic without a human driver, but critics argue that the software still requires significant oversight. Similar investigations have already taken place for other automakers, including Waymo and Cruise, after incidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles.

Under the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, autonomous vehicles must meet the same crashโ€‘worthiness and electronicโ€‘control requirements as conventional cars. The Transportation Department will examine crashโ€‘test results, software updates, and the Cybercabโ€™s onโ€‘board sensors. Tesla has said it will cooperate fully and has released a white paper outlining its safety protocols. Industry analysts note that the investigation could delay the Cybercabโ€™s expansion beyond the pilot cities and may force Tesla to implement additional safety features.

If the investigation finds the Cybercab fails to meet standards, the Department could issue fines or mandate design changes. Even a clean bill of health would set a precedent for how autonomous rideโ€‘hail services are regulated. The outcome will influence not only Teslaโ€™s future deployments but also the broader strategy of U.S. regulators as they balance innovation with public safety. The investigation is expected to conclude by the end of the year, after which the Cybercabโ€™s status will be announced.
