The Texas Longhorns have reached the College World Series for the first time since 2022 after a Super Regional sweep of the Oregon Ducks . But UT is still a long way from winning a national championship. As we just saw with the Texas softball team , the eight-team world series tournament is its own beast.
The Longhorns open with the Georgia Bulldogs , who could be the best team in Omaha. Even though both hail from the SEC, the Longhorns and Bulldogs didn't play each other this year. The winner of Saturday night's clash will have a huge advantage going forward. The loser must fight through the losers bracket and possibly play two extra games.
Georgia not only won the SEC regular season, but they also won the SEC tournament. An astounding feat in its own right. The Horns finished second in the final SEC standings, but UT trailed UGA by 3.5 games in the standings. Texas also crashed out of the SEC tourney in its first game against Arkansas.
It would appear Texas has a distinct pitching advantage over Georgia, certainly in the depth department. That could be key for the Longhorns since the importance of pitching is magnified in Omaha.
The Bulldogs are better offensively, but Texas isn't a slouch at the plate, with SEC batting champ Anthony Pack Jr. and the power trio of Aiden Robbins, Carson Tinney and Casey Borba.
The Georgia-Texas side of the bracket is definitely the harder side of the bracket featuring four teams from the SEC (by far the best baseball conference), and three seeded teams. Georgia is the highest seed remaining in the NCAA postseason tournament with the No. 3 seed. Texas is No. 6 and Alabama is No. 7.
The other side of the CWS bracket includes Cinderella Troy, No. 5 seeded North Carolina, No. 16 seed West Virginia and unseeded Ole Miss. Whichever team emerges from the UT side of the bracket will probably be favored in the championship series.
It will be a dogfight. We'll see if coach Jim Schlossnagle's Longhorns can handle the pressure of the College World Series.
