Aptoide arrives in US Play Store via Google

US Android users can now download a rival app store directly from the Google Play Store for the first time. Aptoide, a Portugal-based store focused on mobile games, launched its app this week, letting users choose where they download apps from. Google had long blocked third-party stores inside its own app, but a court ruling and a settlement with Epic Games changed that.

Google’s legal troubles with Epic Games forced the company to loosen its grip on the Play Store. A federal judge ruled last year that Google’s control over app distribution violated antitrust laws. Under the settlement, Google agreed to allow rival app stores on Android devices in the US. Aptoide is the first to take advantage, offering a curated selection of games outside Google’s usual marketplace. Epic’s legal fight opened the door, but regulators and competitors have pushed for years to break Google’s monopoly.

Aptoide has been around since 2009 but mostly operated in Europe and emerging markets. It lets users discover apps that aren’t on Google’s store, including modified versions and indie titles. The US launch is small but symbolic—it shows Google can no longer block alternatives. Other stores, like Amazon’s Appstore and Samsung’s Galaxy Store, already exist but aren’t directly accessible from the Play Store. Aptoide’s inclusion marks a shift in how Android users get software.

What happens next could reshape the app economy. If Aptoide gains traction, Google may face more competition for app downloads and payments. Regulators in Europe and elsewhere are watching closely, as they push for similar changes. Users might finally get more choice—and lower prices—if rival stores take off. The move also puts pressure on Apple, which still blocks third-party app stores on iPhones. For now, Aptoide’s arrival is just the beginning.
