‘The Odyssey’ has overtaken The Dark Knight Rises to become Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film worldwide, the latest milestone in a career built on blending blockbuster scale with artistic ambition.

Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, starring Matt Damon as the cunning king Odysseus, opened in theaters on July 17 and has since taken in more than $850 million globally, according to studio and tracking estimates. The previous record was held by The Dark Knight Rises, which finished its run with around $843 million in 2012. This marks the first time a director known for cerebral thrillers has topped the box office with an overtly mythological adventure, underscoring how big-budget spectacle and classical storytelling can coexist.

The film’s success comes after years of development delays, script rewrites, and Nolan’s insistence on shooting practical effects—including a full-scale replica of Odysseus’ ship. Damon has said the shoot was physically grueling, with weeks spent on location in Malta and Morocco under harsh conditions. Warner Bros. reportedly greenlit the project after seeing early footage convinced executives that Nolan could turn a 2,800-year-old poem into a visual epic without losing its emotional core. The studio also timed the release to coincide with the summer movie season, banking on Nolan’s reputation for delivering immersive, event-style cinema.

With ‘The Odyssey’ now sitting at Nolan’s highest-grossing title, industry observers expect it to remain a benchmark for future historical epics. The film’s commercial performance could influence how studios approach large-scale adaptations of classic literature, especially those with international appeal. Meanwhile, Nolan has already confirmed his next project will be a biographical thriller about J. Robert Oppenheimer, suggesting his creative range isn’t narrowing—just diversifying. For now, Odysseus’ journey has cemented Nolan’s place not only as a visionary filmmaker but also as a box-office king.
