The scramble to power the AI boom is quietly minting a new crop of winnersโand one of them is Bloom Energy. The hydrogen fuel cell specialist just deepened its partnership with MiTEC, the Silicon Valley maker of energy-hungry AI servers, to supply onsite microgrids that keep the assembly lines running. The deal is the latest sign that the real bottleneck in AI isnโt just data center chips or warehouse space; itโs reliable electricity, and companies are paying premium prices to cut the red tape of the public grid.
For decades, power hungry factories and server farms could wait months or years for grid upgrades. AI hardware makers canโt: every new chip generation needs more juice faster than utilities can deliver. Bloomโs fuel-cell pods can be switched on in weeks, not years, sidestepping both permitting delays and the coming shortage of transmission capacity. MiTECโs Fremont campusโalready host to a Bloom microgridโwill now host a second islanded system, part of a broader push to lock in 250 MW of contracted fuel-cell capacity across nearly two dozen AI suppliers. Two years ago that line of business didnโt exist for Bloom.
The numbers tell the story: Oracle recently upped its commitment to Bloom to 2.8 GW, and Brookfield Asset Management raised its strategic investment five-fold to $25 billion in June. Those pledges sit on top of Bloomโs existing data-center deployments, which already run into the hundreds of megawatts. Analysts now project U.S. AI data centers alone could need more than 100 GW by 2035โroughly the output of fifty large nuclear reactors. Bloomโs edge is that its gear solves the same problem for server factories like MiTEC, where water-cooling demands and soaring demand charges make grid power a liability.
What happens next is a land-rush on industrial real estate with Bloomโs plug-and-play power plants. The company is racing to scale manufacturing of its solid-oxide stacks while utilities struggle to site new substations. For investors, the signal is unmistakable: the AI megatrend needs electrons more than it needs Nvidia cards. Bloom Energy, once a niche clean-tech stock, is suddenly the stock thatโs doubling down on the part of the story everyone else is missing.
