Veterinarians are urging dog owners to take proactive measures against ticks as populations of these blood-sucking parasites continue to rise. Ticks are no longer confined to wooded areas but are increasingly found in backyards and parks. This trend is alarming, especially as data shows that approximately one in every 30 dogs has tested positive for Lyme disease this year, according to the Companion Animal Parasite Council.

The growing threat of ticks coincides with seasonal changes and rising temperatures, which create ideal conditions for tick populations to thrive. With Lyme disease being the most common tick-borne illness affecting dogs, veterinarians emphasize the importance of preventive care. Dr. Lindsay Kendrick, medical director at VEG ER for Pets in Boston, highlights the necessity of year-round tick preventatives and vaccinations against Lyme disease, the only tick-borne disease for which a vaccine exists.

To effectively protect dogs from ticks, owners should regularly check their pets for the parasites and use recommended tick preventatives. Several options are available, including over-the-counter and prescription products that are EPA- or FDA-approved and have been vetted by experts. For thorough checks, experts recommend using a fine-toothed comb to comb through the dog's fur, as ticks can be small and easily overlooked. For dogs with thicker coats, this method is particularly essential, while other tools like the Tick Mitt can also aid in detecting and removing ticks by sweeping across the dogโ€™s body.

As tick populations continue to grow, the importance of vigilance and preventive measures cannot be overstated. Regular checks and appropriate treatments can significantly reduce the risk of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses in dogs, ensuring their health and well-being. Dog owners are encouraged to consult their veterinarians for personalized advice on the best tick prevention strategies for their pets.
