Security forces in Zambia raided a compound in Lusaka on Friday night, seizing highโ€‘grade weapons and arresting 11 people, including senior opposition figures. The raid followed the presidential election held the previous Thursday, in which the opposition candidate Brian Mundubile trailed the incumbent Hakainde Hichilema. Police said the suspects were linked to an alleged insurrection plot that involved foreign nationals and illegal military training camps.

The timing of the operation comes amid a tense postโ€‘election period. Mundubile, who had claimed victory and accused the government of ballotโ€‘box irregularities, was present at the scene of the raid. He described the event as an attempt on his life and said that colleagues were shot. The government denies any wrongdoing, arguing that the election was largely peaceful, although observers raised concerns about late electoral reforms and media freedom.

Patrick Kangwa, Zambiaโ€™s top civil servant, said the arrested individuals possessed weapons, ammunition and other materials intended for an armed uprising. Among those detained were Patrick Mwansa, the husband of Tasila Lungu, daughter of former president Edgar Lungu, and other politicians. The suspects are being held at various police stations in Lusaka while authorities investigate the alleged plot. Mundubile later claimed he was interrogated by army officers over videos he released and alleged assault, allegations the authorities denied.

The incident has already affected the electoral process. Zambiaโ€™s electoral commission briefly suspended the counting of results on Friday, citing violence against polling staff and theft of marked ballot papers, before lifting the halt the same day. Tanzania has rejected claims that it sent individuals to interfere in the election, calling the allegations false. The raid and subsequent arrests raise questions about Zambiaโ€™s political stability and the integrity of its democratic institutions, and may influence how future elections are conducted and perceived by the international community.
