Trump bans CNN and Politico from White House, citing "fiction" in reporting

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, saying the outlets “constantly write or report fiction or lies” about his administration. The announcement came via a Truth Social post and was described by Trump as a “very simple ban,” though he did not explain how the restriction would be enforced or whether the outlets’ reporters would be barred from entering the White House grounds. Trump’s move follows a long‑running feud with the press, dating back to the 2016 campaign and continuing through his first term and his return to office in January 2025. The president cited a “cumulative” series of stories that “made him sick” as the reason for the decision, adding that other media outlets might join the ban.

CNN and Politico reporters were still present on White House grounds shortly after Trump’s announcement, and a CNN crew was traveling with Vice‑President J.D. Vance to an Iowa event. Both outlets immediately issued statements calling the threat illegal. CNN said it would defend its White House team and its constitutional right to report “without hindrance or interference” from the government, labeling the ban an “illegal assault” on press freedom. Politico pledged to continue fair reporting on the White House and future administrations, and warned it would vigorously defend its First Amendment rights. MS NOW, formerly MSNBC, declined to comment. The White House Correspondents Association, led by Jacqui Heinrich of Fox News, said it would stand in defense of journalists who “are being singled out for doing their jobs.” Heinrich added that the issue “is about more than the rights of journalists” and concerns the public’s right to an independent account of presidential actions.

Trump acknowledged that legal challenges are likely, stating, “I think it’s good to point it out, whether it survives or doesn’t.” The ban’s future hinges on how it is implemented and whether the courts deem it a violation of constitutional protections. If the restriction is enforced, the administration could face lawsuits from media organizations and the White House Correspondents Association.
