Trump threatens Iran while urging patience for sanctions

Trump threatened military action against Iran while urging patience for sanctions to work. This mixed messaging reveals a U.S. strategy balancing economic pressure with fears of costly war.

President Donald Trump, in a series of statements on Thursday, warned that the United States would consider using force against Iran if Tehran continued to develop nuclear weapons, while also urging the American public to exercise patience as sanctions take effect. The remarks came after the Trump administration rolled back key provisions of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and imposed a new round of sanctions on Iranโ€™s oil exports and banking sector. The presidentโ€™s comments were delivered at a press briefing in Washington, D.C., and were followed by a brief interview on a popular talk show.

The mixed messaging reflects a broader shift in U.S. policy toward Iran since Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018. The administration has pursued a โ€œmaximum pressureโ€ campaign, tightening sanctions to cripple Iranโ€™s economy and curb its nuclear ambitions. Yet the president has also repeatedly said that a military strike would be a last resort and that the U.S. should give Iran time to respond to the economic squeeze. Analysts say the contradictory tone is partly a response to domestic politicsโ€”Trumpโ€™s base remains hardline on Iran, while his allies in Congress are increasingly wary of a sudden escalation that could drag the U.S. into a costly conflict.

In his remarks, Trump cited the 2023 U.S. Treasury report showing a 15โ€‘percent decline in Iranโ€™s oil revenue and a 12โ€‘percent drop in the value of its currency, arguing that the economic pressure is already crippling Tehranโ€™s ability to fund its military programs. He also referenced the U.S. Department of Defenseโ€™s assessment that Iranโ€™s ballistic missile program poses a growing threat to U.S. forces in the Middle East. Iranโ€™s foreign ministry, in turn, condemned the U.S. statements as โ€œunprovoked aggressionโ€ and warned of โ€œcounterโ€‘measuresโ€ that could include sabotage of U.S. shipping lanes. The Iranian Revolutionary Guardโ€™s spokesperson said the country would โ€œrespond in kindโ€ if the U.S. crossed a red line.

The next week will see the U.S. Secretary of State travel to the Middle East for a series of meetings with Israeli and Gulf leaders, a move that could signal a shift toward a more coordinated regional strategy. Trump has also scheduled a meeting with Congress to outline his plan for further sanctions and to discuss potential diplomatic options. Whether the administration will ultimately move toward a military option or continue to rely on economic pressure remains uncertain, but the conflicting signals suggest a policy in flux that could have significant implications for regional stability and the future of U.S. relations with both Iran and its allies.
