President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday directing federal health agencies to fast-track vaccines for diseases that donโ€™t exist while cutting funding for existing, proven immunizations like the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The order, described by health experts as โ€œmedically baseless,โ€ promotes experimental treatments and repurposes long-standing public health programs to focus on speculative threats. It comes amid a resurgence of preventable diseases and a growing anti-vaccine movement fueled by misinformation.

The move follows years of Trump amplifying debunked claims linking vaccines to autism, including a 2014 tweet in which he called vaccination โ€œan outrageโ€ and suggested it caused developmental disorders. Health officials and scientists have repeatedly refuted these claims, emphasizing that vaccines save millions of lives annually and undergo rigorous safety testing. The order appears to reflect a long-standing pattern of Trump questioning vaccine safety, despite overwhelming scientific consensus. Public health leaders warn that undermining trust in established vaccines could reverse decades of progress in disease prevention.

Under the order, the Department of Health and Human Services will redirect resources away from routine vaccination programs and toward so-called โ€œnext-generationโ€ vaccines for diseases like โ€œchronic Lymeโ€ and โ€œvaccine-resistant flu,โ€ neither of which are recognized by the CDC or the World Health Organization as distinct clinical entities. The directive also halts federal support for school-based vaccination programs in some states, raising concerns among pediatricians and epidemiologists about outbreaks of measles and pertussis. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials called the move โ€œdangerous and counterproductive,โ€ noting that childhood immunization rates have already declined during the pandemic.

The order is expected to face legal challenges from public health groups and state attorneys general, who argue it violates federal health regulations and endangers children. Meanwhile, anti-vaccine advocates have praised the decision, sharing it widely on social media as a victory for โ€œhealth freedom.โ€ Public health experts are scrambling to assess the orderโ€™s impact, with some warning of a potential public health crisis if vaccination rates drop further. The move underscores the growing influence of misinformation in health policy and raises urgent questions about the future of disease prevention in the U.S.
