Duane Davis charged in Tupac Shakur murder

A murder trial over the 1996 killing of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur is about to begin, more than 28 years after the drive-by shooting that stunned the world and reshaped rap music. Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the man prosecutors say planned the attack, is scheduled to appear in a Las Vegas courtroom next week. Davis, now 60, has repeatedly admitted in public that he rode in the car from which the fatal shots were fired near the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole.

Prosecutors allege Davis orchestrated the ambush because of an escalating feud between Shakur and Southside Crips, a Los Angeles street gang. Shakur had been involved in several violent incidents in the months before his death, including a shooting outside a New York recording studio. Davis has long claimed he was only a passenger and never fired a weapon, but he has admitted to being present and to knowing the shooter. The delay in bringing the case to trial—decades after the murder—stems largely from challenges in identifying and locating key witnesses, many of whom feared retaliation from gangs. Only in 2018 did Las Vegas police finally secure enough evidence to reopen the probe.

The trial is expected to hinge on testimony from witnesses who say they heard Davis talk about his role, as well as forensic and digital evidence linking him to the crime. Among those expected to testify is a former friend of Davis’s who has said Davis confessed to being in the car and identifying the gunman. Davis has maintained his innocence in court filings, arguing that his public statements were self-aggrandizing and taken out of context. The prosecution’s case may also explore Davis’s alleged leadership role in the Crips at the time, though no one has ever been charged in connection with Shakur’s death until now.

Legal experts say the trial is a rare moment of accountability for a case that has haunted law enforcement and hip-hop culture for nearly three decades. If Davis is convicted, it could close one of the most infamous cold cases in music history. But with memories faded and witnesses wary, the case still carries the risk of falling short of delivering true closure. Either way, the proceedings will force a reckoning with the violence that marked the rise of West Coast rap—and the long shadow it cast over the culture.
