Former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb said acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has shown “total fealty” to President Trump in a weekend interview, raising fresh questions about the Justice Department’s independence under Trump’s potential return to power.

Cobb, who worked in Trump’s White House counsel’s office during the final stretch of the 2020 election and Trump’s first impeachment, made the comment Saturday on “Mehdi Unfiltered” on Zeteo. His remarks come as Trump ramps up rhetoric about using the Justice Department against political opponents if reelected. Trump has repeatedly said he would direct federal prosecutors to investigate his rivals, including President Biden, and has suggested he would use the DOJ to “root out” perceived corruption in his administration’s critics. Blanche, a former federal prosecutor and Trump White House lawyer, took over as acting attorney general in February following the resignation of Matthew Colangelo.
