Uber and Pony.ai launch 2,000 robotaxis across Europe

Uber has announced a partnership with Chinese autonomous vehicle company Pony.ai to deploy 2,000 robotaxis across Europe. This initiative was revealed on Friday and marks a significant expansion of Uber's robotaxi operations, which already began testing in Zagreb, Croatia, earlier this year. The companies plan to extend their collaboration beyond Europe, with an eye on the Middle East as well.

The move comes as the global market for autonomous vehicles heats up. Uber's strategy is to build a large fleet of self-driving cars to gather critical data that will satisfy regulatory requirements and improve operational efficiency. A larger fleet not only enhances safety demonstrations but also encourages greater public adoption of robotaxi services. The companies did not disclose which European cities would be included in the rollout or a specific timeline for deployment.

Uber's rival, Waymo, leads the global robotaxi market with around 5,000 vehicles primarily operating in the U.S. Waymo is expanding its presence in Europe, testing rides in London and preparing for launches in major EU economies. Chinese competitors like Baidu's Apollo Go and WeRide are also intensifying their efforts to introduce autonomous rides in Europe, with WeRide recently partnering with Uber for a pilot program in Madrid.

Uber's CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, has emphasized the company's ambition to become the leading platform for autonomous vehicle commercialization. Part of this vision includes the collection of extensive data that can be shared with partners to expedite the development of self-driving technology. As the demand for autonomous transportation grows, this partnership could position Uber and Pony.ai at the forefront of the robotaxi industry.
