UCLA Baseball Upset By St. Mary’s Again, Eliminated From NCAA Tournament

A shocking upset by St. Mary’s on Friday sent UCLA baseball to the loser’s bracket of the Los Angeles Regional. The Bruins and Gaels met once again in an elimination game on Sunday, and St. Mary’s found a way to pull off another upset over UCLA to eliminate the No. 1 overall seed from the NCAA Tournament.

UCLA ultimately lost 6-5 after Makoa Sniffen walked it off for St. Mary’s with an RBI single in the 10th inning.

“We didn’t play well enough this weekend,” UCLA coach John Savage said after the game, per ESPN . “Saint Mary’s, to their credit, I thought played very well. A really good team. … They’ve got good players, good coaches. We didn’t get it done, but to all the guys in that clubhouse, we just tip our hat, because they are what college players should be.”

UCLA has six players projected to be selected in the 2026 MLB Draft this summer.

Led by shortstop Roch Cholowsky, who is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, the other five Bruins are right-hander Logan Reddemann, center fielder Will Gasparino, third baseman Roman Martin, first baseman Mulivai Levu and right-hander Cal Randall.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel predicted Cholowsky and Reddemann will be first or second round draft picks, while Gasparino, Martin, Levu and Randall are expected to be third to fifth round picks.

Savage praised UCLA’s squad for their accomplishments this season, despite the disappointing end to the playoff run. The Bruins were the No. 1 ranked program for the entire season and won both the Big Ten regular season title and tournament title this season.
