Ukraine denied targeting Bulgaria on Saturday after a small drone crashed near a major gas pipeline in the country. The incident happened in a rural field near the Romanian border, close to where Bulgaria meets the Black Sea. Bulgarian officials said the drone appeared to be a model used by Ukraine’s military, raising concerns about a possible strike on infrastructure. Energy transit is critical in the region, and the pipeline links Bulgaria to gas supplies from Azerbaijan and Turkey.

The drone war between Russia and Ukraine has been spreading across borders in recent months. Ukrainian forces have used long-range drones to hit targets inside Russia, while Russian forces have launched strikes on Ukrainian energy sites and nearby countries. Bulgaria is a key transit route for Russian gas to Europe, and any disruption raises alarms in Brussels and NATO capitals. The explosion near the pipeline came just days after Ukrainian drones struck Russian refineries, prompting Moscow to warn of retaliation against neighboring states that host Ukrainian equipment.

Bulgarian authorities said the drone was recovered intact and sent for inspection. Early reports suggest it was a commercial-style quadcopter modified for military use, similar to models seen in Ukraine’s arsenal. There were no injuries, and the pipeline operator said gas flows were unaffected. Still, the incident has triggered calls from Bulgarian politicians for stronger border controls and clearer assurances from Kyiv.

NATO allies are watching closely, wary of escalation. Ukraine insists it did not authorize any strike on Bulgaria and has pledged to help investigate. But the episode highlights how the wider conflict is spilling over into fragile regional stability.
