May 29 (Reuters) - UnitedHealth's insurance unit on Friday said it would eliminate prior approval requirements for โabout two-thirds of its healthcare services for members under โage 18, as insurers aim to reduce delays and paperwork amid โcomplaints from patients and doctors.
U.S. health insurers have been working to deliver on commitments made last year to reduce excessive paperwork that can delay or even deny needed care.
โข UnitedHealthcare โsaid it would โ eliminate prior approval for many diagnostic services, routine surgical procedures and specialty care services across โ pediatric subspecialties such as cardiology, neurology, pulmonology and orthopedics.
โข It will also introduce authorization waivers for certain procedures performed โat leading โcomprehensive pediatric hospitals, the insurer โsaid.
โข "Parents should be able โto spend less time having to navigate the health system and more time focusing on their children as they get the care they need," said Tim Noel, CEO of UnitedHealthcare.
โข The insurer added it is conducting a โrigorous, data-driven review of all pediatric โprior authorization requirements to determine โwhich services can be โsafely removed.
โข Last month, UnitedHealth and CVS โHealth said they had standardized โdata and submission โrequirements for more than half of their prior authorizations.
โข More than 70% of UnitedHealthcare's prior authorizations will โbe part of โthe new standardized submission process by the year's โend, the insurer said.
