The United States Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on Turkey's Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi, citing alleged connections to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The sanctions, announced on Friday, target the bank and its subsidiaries, aiming to further isolate Iran economically amid ongoing tensions.
This action comes as part of a broader U.S. strategy to curb Iran's financial capabilities, particularly its ability to conduct international transactions. The Treasury accused Golden Global Bank of facilitating significant financial transactions on behalf of Iran, specifically asserting that the bank was established to support Iranโs shadow banking operations. The U.S. claims these operations help transfer oil revenues from China to Turkey, a charge that Golden Global Bank vehemently denies.
In response, Golden Global Bank stated that it complies with all relevant local and international banking regulations. The bank announced plans to take legal action against the U.S. sanctions, asserting that there are no transactions that validate the accusations from Washington. "We will exercise all our rights of objection and legal recourse," the bank said, emphasizing its commitment to defending its reputation.
The sanctions also remove Golden Global Bank from the U.S. financial system, making it more challenging for the institution to operate internationally. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, sought to clarify that this measure should not be interpreted as a judgment on Turkey as a whole. He emphasized that the integrity of Turkey's financial system remains intact, focusing solely on the actions of the targeted bank. As the U.S. continues to ramp up its economic pressure on Iran, further sanctions could follow, impacting regional banking relationships and financial stability.
