The U.S. is set to impose a ban on imports of various Canadian products, including motorbikes and alcoholic beverages, starting September 29, 2026. This decision comes amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa, as diplomatic relations further deteriorate.

President Donald Trump announced the executive orders on Tuesday, which will replace existing tariffs of 50% on Canadian goods. The ban extends to whey products, molasses, nonalcoholic beer, malt beer, wines, ciders, whiskies, vodka, and larger-capacity motorcycles and mopeds. Additionally, the U.S. plans to modify and extend tariffs on other Canadian products, such as all-terrain vehicles and animal hides, while removing tariffs on rock salt and cement.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that these measures are a response to what he described as Canada's "discriminatory treatment" of American exports. The announcement coincided with the implementation of Canadian tariffs on $20 billion worth of U.S. imports, which target over 700 products, including steel and dairy. This retaliatory action follows the U.S. imposing tariffs on Canadian hockey sticks, wine, and other goods after failed trade negotiations earlier this month.

Both nations continue to blame each other for the stalled discussions and the resulting trade war. Trump has pointed to Canada's restrictions in the auto, alcohol, and dairy sectors as harmful to U.S. exports. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended his country's tariffs as necessary to protect local businesses and workers. Economists warn that these trade disputes could impact small and medium-sized businesses on both sides of the border, raising concerns about broader economic growth.
