USA Network has launched “Anna Pigeon,” a new original drama set in Montana’s fictional Glacier National Park, following a former Broadway stage manager turned law enforcement ranger. The eight‑part series, based on Nevada Barr’s long-running crime novels, premiered this week as part of USA’s push into scripted programming. It stars Chicago P.D. alum Jaime Ray Newman as the eponymous ranger, trading New York’s lights for the rugged wilderness of the northern Rockies.

The show arrives as streamers and cable nets chase cheaper, serialized genre content. USA, best known for unscripted hits like WWE SmackDown, is betting on “Anna Pigeon” to build a stable of original dramas that can compete for viewers and talent. The network has quietly expanded its scripted slate since 2023, adding four new series this year alone. Barr’s 19-book series has long been a favorite among mystery readers, but this is its first major television adaptation.

Newman plays Anna Pigeon, a disciplined ranger who moves to Glacier National Park to escape her past after leaving behind a career on Broadway. The series blends crime investigation with the show’s scenic backdrop, a formula that echoes USA’s earlier rural dramas like “Tremors” and “The Dead Don’t Hurt.” Critics note the show leans into the same “Temu version” of escapism that made “Virgin River” a streaming hit—lavish landscapes, moral clarity, and a protagonist with a tightly guarded secret.

USA has ordered a second season before the first has finished airing, signaling confidence in the series. If it finds a broad audience, it could help redefine USA’s brand beyond wrestling and reality TV. For Newman, who has spent years in network procedurals, the role is a chance to anchor a franchise. For Barr’s fans, it’s a rare chance to see their beloved books adapted for a mainstream audience. The gamble is whether viewers will follow a new drama into the wilderness—or keep scrolling for the next viral show.
