Vistra President and CEO James Burke bought 8,665 shares in three open-market purchases on August 24, August 31, and September 1, spending $1.17 million. The filings show 2,000 shares bought at $135, 2,200 at a weighted-average $135.99, and 4,465 at a weighted-average $135.25. All three purchases were made through JAMEB, LP, a limited partnership jointly owned with his spouse. After the last trade, that vehicle held 1,146,352 shares. The buying is modest beside Burke's total beneficial ownership, but it is still a useful signal after Vistra's long retreat from its 2025 highs. The stock closed September 2 at $143.46, about 24% below its September 3, 2025 close, although it had rebounded from Burke's purchase prices.

The bull case rests on something AI developers cannot easily improvise: dependable power. Data centers need round-the-clock electricity, grid connections, and firm capacity, not just planned renewable projects. Vistra Corp. (NYSE: VST ) owns nuclear and natural-gas generation alongside a large retail electricity business. If AI-related load grows faster than generation and transmission can be added, existing reliable plants could command better economics.

Recent results support that thesis without proving it. Second-quarter ongoing-operations adjusted EBITDA rose more than 30% year over year to $1.767 billion, and management reaffirmed its 2026 range of $6.8 billion to $7.6 billion. Vistra also committed up to $1 billion to Helix Digital Infrastructure and will serve as its preferred power provider; KKR, Kuwait Investment Authority, and Nvidia are fellow founding investors.

The risks are equally concrete. Second-quarter GAAP net income was $305 million and included a $472 million unrealized loss on hedges expected to settle in future years. Power prices invite political scrutiny, while outages, weather, fuel costs, and hedging can overwhelm an attractive demand story in any single quarter. The purchases therefore should not be treated as a precise call on the bottom.

Professional investors were adding exposure before Burke's trades. Insider Monkey counted 111 hedge funds holding Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST) at June 30, up from 106 one quarter earlier. Appaloosa Management increased its position 10% to 2,215,272 shares. That is broader support, although 13F filings are quarter-end snapshots and reveal nothing about trades made since June.

Short interest was not extreme: 9,636,577 shares were sold short at the August 14 settlement, equal to 1.87 days of average volume. The decisive evidence will be contracted load, realized power prices, plant availability, and returns on new capitalโ€”not insider buying by itself. It is evidence, not a verdict on the AI-power thesis.

While we acknowledge the potential of VST as an investment, we believe certain other AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
