Vivo launched its X500 Pro Max flagship in China on Tuesday, touting a camera that can capture 17 stops of dynamic range and record 4K video at 240 frames per second. The phone uses a new Sony IMX989 sensor paired with MediaTekโ€™s Dimensityโ€ฏ9300โ€‘Pro chipset, marking the first time the two suppliers have collaborated on a consumerโ€‘grade device.

The move comes as smartphone makers race to differentiate their cameras after years of incremental improvements. Sonyโ€™s largeโ€‘sensor technology, first seen in highโ€‘end phones like the Samsung Galaxyโ€ฏS23 Ultra, allows more light to reach the pixel, which translates into brighter highlights and deeper shadows. MediaTekโ€™s latest imageโ€‘processing unit adds realโ€‘time HDR and AIโ€‘driven noise reduction, enabling the advertised 17โ€‘stop dynamic rangeโ€”a figure previously reserved for professional cameras. Vivoโ€™s focus on photography follows a pattern set by Chinese rivals such as Huawei and Xiaomi, which have leveraged premium optics to compete with Apple and Samsung in a saturated market.

Analysts say the X500 Pro Max could boost Vivoโ€™s share among photographyโ€‘enthusiast users, a segment that now accounts for a sizable portion of highโ€‘end phone sales in China. IDC data shows Chinese manufacturers collectively hold over 60โ€ฏpercent of the domestic premium market, and Vivoโ€™s new sensor stack may help it capture a larger slice of that pie. Early reviewers have praised the phoneโ€™s ability to retain detail in bright skies and dark interiors, while the 4Kโ€ฏ240โ€ฏfps sloโ€‘mo feature appeals to content creators on platforms like TikTok and Bilibili. However, some critics note the high price tagโ€”roughly ยฅ7,999 (about $1,100)โ€”could limit its appeal to budgetโ€‘conscious consumers.

Vivo plans to roll the X500 series out to other Asian markets later this year, with a European debut slated for early 2027. The company says software updates will further refine the HDR algorithms and expand the slowโ€‘motion modes. If the phone lives up to its specifications, it could set a new benchmark for mobile imaging and pressure rivals to adopt similar sensorโ€‘chipset partnerships, accelerating the arms race for everโ€‘more capable smartphone cameras.
