Netanyahu addresses UN on Gaza war and Iran tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will speak to the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, and his remarks are expected to focus on the war in Gaza and the rising tension with Iran that has drawn the United States into the dispute. The address comes as Israel battles Hamas in the southern Gaza Strip and Iranian‑backed militias have launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Israeli territory, prompting Washington to warn Tehran of “consequences” if the strikes continue.

The backdrop to Netanyahu’s speech is a year‑long conflict that began with Hamas’s October 2023 assault on Israel and has since killed more than 30,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis, according to the United Nations. In March, Israel struck the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, killing senior Iranian officials and sparking Tehran’s vow of retaliation. He is expected to thank the United States for its support and to call for a “new security architecture” that isolates Tehran. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is slated to speak after Netanyahu, reiterating Washington’s commitment to Israel’s right to self‑defence while urging a humanitarian pause in Gaza. Iran’s foreign ministry has already issued a statement condemning the upcoming address as “an attempt to legitimize aggression,” and Palestinian leaders have called for a strong UN resolution condemning Israel’s conduct.

The speech could shape the next round of diplomatic moves in New York. If Netanyahu frames the conflict as a fight against Iranian aggression, the Security Council may see a split between the U.S. and its European allies over any cease‑fire resolution. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights Council is preparing a separate hearing on civilian casualties in Gaza, which could increase pressure on Israel. Netanyahu’s remarks will therefore be watched not only for rhetoric but for signals about whether Israel is prepared to broaden its military campaign or seek a negotiated end to the fighting.
