Chicago mom saves $380 by throwing backyard birthday party

A Chicago mother saved $380 by hosting her childโ€™s birthday in a muddy backyard instead of a $500/day venue. Hosting at home can cut party costs from $500 to under $200, creating messier, more memoraโ€ฆ

We skipped the expensive birthday venue. Our muddy backyard was better for 90 kids.

A mother in suburban Chicago skipped the $500-a-day bounce-house venue and invited 90 kids to her muddy backyard instead. The result: the best birthday party she says sheโ€™s ever thrown.

The pivot came after she tallied up the price tags she saw on Instagram last year. A single inflatable slide was renting for $350. A full โ€œparty zoneโ€ with games, tables, and cleanup staff ran past $800. When she added catering, pizza boxes alone would have topped $300 before tip. Mid-list prices and a pile of RSVPs from classmates she couldnโ€™t turn away finally pushed her to DIY. She spent $120 on bulk chips, hot dogs, and paper goods, then let the kids run through sprinklers and a kiddie pool. No one cared that the grass turned to muck.

Parents whoโ€™ve made the same switch say the math is simple. A 2023 Care.com survey found the average American spends $500 on kidsโ€™ parties, up from $350 in 2019. Venues mark up food, add service fees, and often tack on overtime if the party runs late. Families who host at home keep every dollar for food, favors, or college funds. One dad in Austin cut his party budget from $700 to $180 by moving the celebration to his cul-de-sac. His sonโ€™s only request: โ€œMore mud.โ€

Experts expect the backyard trend to keep growing. Party-rental companies now sell โ€œbackyard bundleโ€ kits with sanitized inflatables and pop-up fences for about half the venue price. Even schools are getting in on the idea: some are offering Friday โ€œfield daysโ€ where parents can reserve the blacktop for $25 instead of renting bounce castles downtown. The shift isnโ€™t just about cash. Families say the messy, unscripted chaos creates memories that slick, timed slots at a venue never do.
