634 women who work in technology told WIRED what itโ€™s like to navigate a field still dominated by men, and the responses ranged from frustration to cautious optimism. The survey, conducted between March and May, found that 71โ€ฏpercent of respondents feel pressure to adopt AI tools even when they lack proper training, while 58โ€ฏpercent say the โ€œbro cultureโ€ of many startโ€‘up teams makes it harder to speak up. More than half of the women said they have left a job because the environment was hostile or because they were expected to work longer hours without extra pay. The data were collected online and represent a crossโ€‘section of roles, from software engineers and data scientists to product managers and UX designers, across companies of all sizes in the United States and Europe.

The findings arrive at a moment when the tech industry is under intense scrutiny for its diversity record and its rapid embrace of artificial intelligence. After a series of highโ€‘profile scandals involving harassment and gender bias, major firms have pledged to improve inclusion, yet progress has stalled. At the same time, AIโ€‘driven automation is reshaping daily workflows, prompting executives to push for faster adoption without addressing the skill gap among staff. Women in tech, who already face a 20โ€‘percent wage gap and underโ€‘representation in leadership, are now confronting an added layer of uncertainty: whether AI will augment their careers or accelerate layoffs. Industry analysts note that the pandemicโ€™s shift to remote work has both exposed and widened these disparities, as informal networking โ€“ a key route to promotions โ€“ often happens in maleโ€‘centric virtual spaces.

Tech companies and advocacy groups are already reacting to the surveyโ€™s alarm bells. The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) announced plans to launch a mentorship program that pairs senior women engineers with earlyโ€‘career talent, focusing on AI literacy and navigating workplace culture. Meanwhile, several large firms, including Microsoft and Google, said they will audit AI deployment practices to ensure equitable training opportunities. Labor unions are urging regulators to consider AIโ€‘related job displacement when drafting future workplace protections. The WIRED survey suggests that without concrete steps to address both cultural and technical challenges, the industry risks losing a vital segment of its talent pool, which could slow innovation and widen the gender gap in the next wave of tech development.
