The first critical figure for the 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be released on August 12. The Bureau of Labor Statistics will announce the July Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) at 8:30 a.m. ET. This number is essential for estimating how much Social Security benefits will increase next year.

COLA adjustments are based on inflation changes measured from the previous yearโ€™s third quarter. The current estimate for the 2027 COLA is around 3.8%, according to The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan senior advocacy group. This figure is notably higher than the 2.8% increase seen in 2026. However, the estimate could fluctuate as additional inflation data is released over the coming months. The final COLA figure will not be confirmed until October 14, when the September CPI-W is announced.

A 3.8% COLA would mean an increase of approximately $79 for the average monthly retirement benefit, which was $2,084 as of June 2026. Beneficiaries can calculate a rough idea of their new monthly checks by adding this percentage increase to their current benefits. However, fluctuations in the estimates may occur, and beneficiaries will have to wait until the official announcement in October for precise numbers.

It's important to note that rising Medicare Part B premiums could offset some of these gains. Beneficiaries will receive a personalized notice in December detailing the exact amount they will receive after accounting for any premium increases. This information will be crucial for planning budgets and managing expenses in 2027, as many Americans rely on Social Security to cover essential costs.
