The Senior Citizens League has projected that Social Security beneficiaries will see a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) starting in January 2027. This estimate comes after the latest consumer inflation data was released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While the final COLA figure will not be confirmed until October, this early estimate suggests an increase in the average monthly payment to about $2,146.

The COLA is designed to help retirees keep pace with inflation. Each year, the Social Security Administration adjusts benefits to offset rising costs. Unlike the widely reported Consumer Price Index (CPI-U), which measures inflation for all urban consumers, the COLA is determined using the CPI for urban wage earners and clerical workers (CPI-W). This specific index is calculated based on data from the months of July, August, and September, which is why beneficiaries must wait until October for the final adjustment figure.

Current inflation trends indicate that beneficiaries can expect a stable increase. The CPI-W registered a year-over-year change of 3.4% in July, mirroring the CPI-U. Although fluctuations in inflation could still occur in August and September, experts believe that significant changes are unlikely. Price movements tend to be gradual, and there is even a chance that inflation could rise again, potentially impacting the final COLA percentage.

The anticipation of the COLA is crucial for many retirees, as it directly affects their financial stability. The increase could help offset higher living costs, especially in the wake of ongoing economic pressures. For now, beneficiaries and advocates will be watching closely to see how inflation evolves before the final numbers are released this fall.
