WhatsApp beta adds in-chat search for iOS users

WhatsApp’s latest iOS beta includes a hint about a long-rumored in-chat search tool, letting users find messages without leaving a conversation.

The feature would let people type a keyword or phrase in the chat itself and see matching messages instantly, rather than opening the chat info screen and tapping “Search.” It’s part of WhatsApp’s push to cut clicks and keep users inside the app. The company has tested similar shortcuts before, like inline media galleries and quick-reply previews, to make chats faster and less cluttered.

Beta testers on iOS 24.11.10.75 saw a hidden menu label reading “Search in chat,” suggesting the tool is close to release. WhatsApp has not confirmed the feature, but code strings point to a search bar that appears when you swipe down in a conversation. The change follows years of user requests for better message discovery in crowded group chats or long threads.

If rolled out widely, the feature could reduce the 30% of support tickets related to “lost messages” and keep users from switching to rivals like Telegram or Signal that already offer quick in-chat search. WhatsApp’s parent Meta has been under pressure to add productivity tools without breaking its simple reputation. A public launch could come with the next stable iOS update, expected in the next two months.
