Arsenal have closed one big door and opened another this transfer window after failing to land Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr but succeeding in signing Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million.

The Gunners’ pursuit of Vinicius Jr became one of the most public sagas of the summer, ending in disappointment for both club and fans. In contrast, Guimaraes arrives as a direct reinforcement for a side chasing back-to-back Premier League titles. The Brazilian midfielder, bought from Newcastle, fits the “win now” strategy that has also seen Arsenal sign Martin Zubimendaes and Viktor Gyokeres in recent months. Manager Mikel Arteta suggested more signings could still arrive before the deadline, saying the club is chasing the “right player” to make the team stronger.

Arsenal also face a defensive crisis with Jurrien Timber and William Saliba sidelined through injury ahead of the new season. That absence raises the urgency for further additions, especially in wide positions where the club struggled for consistent production last term. Arsenal have already moved for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, though Liverpool and other clubs are also chasing the French attacker. PSG’s asking price is reported to be over £100 million, a figure that could price Arsenal out of the deal.

Among the alternatives being tracked is Kenan Yildiz, the 21-year-old Juventus winger who scored 11 goals and made 10 assists in all competitions last season. The Turkey international offers versatility, able to play on either flank or through the middle, and his unpredictability unsettles defenders. Arsenal have also signed Greek forward Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge to replace Leandro Trossard, though replicating the Belgian’s 22-goal, 29-assist haul from last season looks unlikely. With limited time left in the window and Vinicius Jr off the table, Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta must identify affordable, high-impact talent to keep Arsenal in the title race.
