Jamming signals won't just silence your noisy neighbor. It can also interfere with critical infrastructure and emergency services, too.

In theory, Bluetooth jammers have both practical and petty use cases. They can prevent unwanted connections to devices with sensitive information on them, block Bluetooth tracking or surveillance devices like AirTags or simply stop your neighbor blasting loud music through their speakers. In practice, however, the use of Bluetooth jammers is almost always illegal.

Bluetooth jammers are just one of many types of radio jammer, all of which are designed to obfuscate different signals. There are jammers for GPS, radar, Wi-Fi, cellular signals and even drones, all of which work on the same basic principle: broadcasting large amounts of radio noise that drowns out anything else. As you might expect, such wide-scale disruption can cause a lot of problems, especially when it comes to public safety.

There are two types of Bluetooth : Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth Low Energy. Both forms of Bluetooth utilize radio waves on the 2.4 GHz band to communicate with devices, with the former utilizing 79 different frequencies and the latter utilizing 40. Wi-Fi routers also operate in the same 2.4 GHz range, so once two Bluetooth devices are paired, the connection continues to hop between smaller channels within that frequency in order to prevent interference.

Bluetooth jammers broadcast radio frequencies across the entire 2.4 GHz band at once. This means that Bluetooth communications cannot arrive, or are too garbled to matter โ€” think of it like trying to talk to your friend at a very loud concert. Commercial Bluetooth jammers can also broadcast waves across the 5 GHz band as well, doubling as a Wi-Fi jammer, while DIY devices tend to have less capability and range.

The usage of any jammers, Bluetooth included, is illegal in most countries, with minimal exceptions like military applications. In the United States, it isย outlawed in the Communications Act of 1934 and further solidified by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. Many other countries have similar legislation, with the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency, outlining several articlesย for all member countries regarding radio wave interference.

With a myriad of devices running across the 2.4 GHz band, the usage of a jammer affects anything nearby. Even ones designed for close-range personal use can have aย range of around 50 feet, which is more than enough to disrupt nearby Wi-Fi, baby monitors, security systems, medical equipment like glucose monitors and much more. Most importantly, it can impact law enforcement and first responders' ability to do their job, as it can interfere with Bluetooth-based communications and body cameras. Stronger jammers can even affect important vehicle equipment that utilizes Wi-Fi, as well as critical services like emergency dispatch networks and remote access to patient medical data.

Not only is it forbidden to use jammers, but their use can be traced due to the fact they broadcast their own location. Through a combination of spectrum analysis tools and direction-finding equipment, law enforcement can track you down, and the consequences will be much more than a slap on the wrist. The Department of Homeland Security encourages citizens to report any suspected jamming, and those found guilty of utilizing signal jammers of any kind can face significant fines and even jail time.
