Scientists now believe it evolved as a way to maximize reproductive success in the deep sea, where finding a mate is rare and energy is scarce.

Anglerfish live in the pitch-black depths where food is scarce and potential mates are spread thin. Most species rely on bioluminescent lures to attract prey and partners. But for some, like the deep-sea anglerfish *Haplophryne mollis*, males donโ€™t grow large enough to compete or survive long on their own. Instead, they evolve to locate a female, latch onto her body, and fuse their tissuesโ€”eventually becoming a permanent sperm-producing appendage.
