B.C. wildfire forces 20,000 evacuations near Kelowna

A fast-moving wildfire has forced more than 20,000 people to evacuate parts of British Columbia’s Okanagan region in Western Canada. The Bald Range fire, which started last week near Kelowna, has grown to about 9,500 hectares and is threatening homes, farms, and critical infrastructure. Firefighters from across Canada and the U.S. are battling the blaze, which has prompted the province to declare a state of emergency.

The Okanagan is a key agricultural and tourism hub, known for its vineyards and lakefront communities. The region is also experiencing extreme heat and prolonged drought, conditions that have dried out forests and made them more vulnerable to wildfires. Climate scientists warn that rising temperatures linked to global warming are increasing the frequency and intensity of such fires. Last year, British Columbia saw its worst wildfire season on record, with over 2.8 million hectares burned.

Evacuation orders cover Kelowna, West Kelowna, and surrounding rural areas, disrupting schools, businesses, and summer tourism.
