In late 2024, North Korea sent between 14,000 and 15,000 troops to the Kursk region of Russia to assist in its ongoing war against Ukraine. Recent intelligence reports indicate that North Korea is considering deploying an additional 30,000 to 50,000 soldiers to bolster Russian defenses. Ukrainian officials have also noted that North Korean ballistic missiles are being launched from Russian territory, raising new concerns about the geopolitical ramifications of this military cooperation.

This development comes at a time when Ukraine is focused on its own military strategies amid ongoing conflict. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed alarm over the potential threat posed by North Korea's enhanced combat capabilities and missile technology, which could destabilize not only Ukraine but also the broader Asia-Pacific region. Military analysts have weighed in on the implications of North Korea's involvement, emphasizing that the additional troops could primarily be used to secure Russian border territories rather than engage directly in combat within Ukraine.

Military and political expert Oleksandr Kovalenko suggested that the North Korean forces could help relieve Russian troops along the front lines, allowing Moscow to redeploy approximately 15,000 soldiers to critical areas such as Vovchansk and Kharkiv. However, other analysts, like Ruslan Leviev, caution that while North Korean troops might assist in securing Russian territory, they are unlikely to participate in offensive operations on internationally recognized Ukrainian land. Leviev noted that the Russian military has shown sufficient activity and manpower since mid-July, making the deployment of foreign troops less necessary.

Despite the significant number of troops and missiles being discussed, some experts remain skeptical about the actual presence of North Korean forces in Russia. Janis Kluge, an economist at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, pointed out that Russia continues to recruit contract soldiers at a substantial rate, indicating that Moscow is not entirely dependent on foreign assistance. As tensions continue to rise, the international community will be watching closely to see how this evolving military partnership affects the dynamics of the conflict in Ukraine and beyond.
