From security cameras to connected sensors, there are plenty of hardware solutions you can use to protect your home. Comcast, however, has a different idea on how to defend your home from threats. That solution is rolling out today as a new Xfinity offering.
In a blog post , Comcast announced the launch of Xfinity Shield. According to the company, this is a โfirst-of-its-kindโ platform for home protection. At the core of Xfinity Shield is what the company calls โWiFi Shield.โ
As the internet provider explains, WiFi Shield provides three layers of protection: CyberSecure, WiFi Motion, and Family Settings. The first layer refers to the Xfinity gateway blocking cyberthreats (malware, phishing, etc), which is a normal feature for a gateway you get from a provider. Family Settings, which lets you set online boundaries for the people in your home, isnโt exactly unheard of either. However, itโs the second layer of protection thatโs interesting.
WiFi Motion is described as an opt-in feature for physical protection of the home. Itโs designed to detect motion within the home without the need for cameras or motion-detecting sensors. The feature accomplishes this by detecting radio frequency signal changes between the gateway and a Wi-Fi-connected device. If motion is detected, you are sent a notification in the Xfinity app.
As mentioned earlier, Xfinity Shield is available starting today. However, WiFi Shield requires the customer to have an Advanced Xfinity gateway. Comcast says it plans to add more capabilities and experiences to this platform in 2027.
