Houthi group escalates drone attacks; Yemeni government retaliates with strikes

The Houthi armed group in Yemen launched drone attacks on government military camps last week, resulting in numerous casualties among government soldiers. In response, the internationally recognized Yemeni government has begun using its own drones to target Houthi fighters on the front lines. This escalation marks a significant shift in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the increasing reliance on drone warfare by both sides.

The recent uptick in drone usage comes amidst a backdrop of a decade-long struggle for power in Yemen, which has seen the Houthis, backed by Iran, gain significant ground since capturing the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014. The Yemeni government, once led by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, has been weakened and fractured, with many leaders fleeing the country for safety in Saudi Arabia. Marius Bales from the Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies emphasized that even without matching the Houthis' extensive capabilities, the government's enhanced use of drones represents a crucial shift in its military strategy.
