Google’s teaming up with pharmaceutical giant Abbott to bring continuous glucose monitor (CGM) support to the Google Health app. Starting this year, Abbott’s Lingo CGM will be compatible with Google Health, letting users automatically import their glucose numbers into Google’s system.
The collaboration was announced today in a press release from Abbott . With a Lingo CGM paired with Google Health, users can get “AI-powered, personalized health guidance” that takes into account fluctuations in blood glucose levels.
Abbott notes that metabolic health issues are alarmingly prevalent in modern society, citing CDC data that says more than 40% of American adults may meet the diagnostic threshold for prediabetes, and that most affected adults aren’t aware of it. CGM integration in Google Health won’t do anything to address the environmental factors causing these problems, but optimistically, it could help individual users make more informed decisions by highlighting correlations between blood glucose levels and nutrition, exercise, and sleep habits in near-real time.
The partnership also includes “one of the largest real-world studies of its kind,” which will incorporate data tracked by Google Health along with readings from Abbott’s Lingo CGM, as well as lab and user survey data, to inform AI-based guidance in Google Health and Abbot’s future products. AI medical advice health guidance seems like a dicey proposition, given LLMs’ continued tendency to flub facts and figures. I’ll be interested to see how the program holds up to regulatory scrutiny in the future.
Lingo CGM integration will require access to the AI-powered Google Health Coach, which is available as part of the Google Health Premium subscription that costs $10 per month or $100 per year. Abbott says the integration will roll out later this year.
